Having dental anxiety can cause people to avoid regular checkups and cleanings at their local Palmdale, CA dentist. This can be extremely detrimental to your oral health. Premier Dental Care and Implant Centers show how they help patients with dental anxiety get over the fear of the dentist.
What Causes Dental Fear?
There’s no real way to know what causes dental anxiety. It can vary from patient to patient. Some may struggle with the unfamiliar lights and sounds used in a dentist’s office. Some may have had a bad experience with a dentist before, leading them to avoid them all. Regardless of what your reasoning is, Premier Dental Care uses information and helpful techniques to assist you in any dental procedure you may need.
Giving Patients Education
Our experienced staff first uses education to help patients understand exactly what’s going on. We can run you through the entire process of what we’re going to do during your procedure. This means that there won’t be any surprises. You’ll know exactly what’s going to happen and when.
Offering Sedation Dentistry
For patients that struggle immensely, we offer sedation dentistry for dental fear. This helps you stay relaxed throughout your entire dental procedure. We offer two forms of sedation at our Palmdale and Lancaster locations:
- IV Sedation: IV sedation puts you fully under during the procedure. It’s administered through an IV in your arm throughout the process. The effect will take hold immediately as the IV is administered, and you shouldn’t be able to remember anything from the procedure
- Oral Sedation: Oral sedation is taken in pill form before your procedure, usually for a few hours. Throughout the procedure, you’ll still be awake, alert, and able to answer questions if needed. However, you’ll be fully relaxed throughout the procedure. Sometimes patients even fall asleep!
For both of these options, you’ll need to have a driver with you after the procedure. For oral sedation, they’ll have to drive both to our office and back. Both forms of sedation can take hours for it to fully wear out.
Sedation dentistry can also help conditions besides dental fear. For example, it can be administered to people that have bad gag reflexes or low pain tolerance.
It’s also a great option for patients that have special needs or a disability. If you have a movement disorder, it can help you stay still for the procedure. It’s also useful to get multiple procedures in the same session.
