Taking Care of Your Yellow Teeth in Palmdale and Lancaster, California

Why Are My Teeth Discolored?

Tooth discoloration can be a result of many conditions. As we age, our teeth naturally get discolored. Enamel is less prevalent and the darker layers underneath are more visible. Your personal habits contribute to this as well. Drinking coffee or other dark drinks like soda or tea frequently will stain your teeth over time. Smoking will change the color of your teeth as well.

Certain medications can cause staining on the teeth as well. This type of staining can be particularly difficult to take care of. Traditional teeth whitening techniques are often not successful at removing stains. This is why we offer multiple techniques to take care of discolored teeth in both of our offices.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a typical way to treat discolored teeth. We offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening. Professional teeth whitening is designed to be more even and better for the gums and soft tissue than you’d get with over-the-counter treatments.

In-office teeth whitening is a quick treatment that’s ideal to get you ready before an event. A special gel is applied by the dentist and is activated by a special light. The treatment takes about an hour in our office. When the hour is over, you’ll have teeth that are up to eight shades whiter than when you came in!

At-home teeth whitening can be used as a full whitening treatment or for touchups after in-office whitening. Impressions will be taken of your teeth and custom bleaching trays will be made to ensure bleaching gel doesn’t harm the soft tissues of your mouth. The whitening gel is evenly displaced in the trays and you’ll wear them for a few hours each day. Your smile will whiten gradually until your teeth are the shade you’re looking for.

Dental Bonding

Because the composite resin used in dental bonding is easily malleable and can be color-customized, it’s an ideal choice to help with discolored teeth. If your stained teeth are resistant to traditional whitening, this is one of the options you can turn to. It can last for years and it’s one of the most economical options for dental treatment.

For dental bonding, you can consult with your dentist about the shade you’re looking for. Once the resin is colored to your liking, the dentist will paint it over the number of teeth you want. The teeth will be prepped beforehand to ensure the resin adheres to the teeth properly. Once the resin is positioned to your liking, it’ll be cured with a special light to harden it. It’s shined and polished to match the sheen of your natural teeth.

Porcelain Veneers

For a more permanent solution, porcelain veneers can last for around 20 years with proper care. They’re thin shells of dental ceramic that go over the front and sides of your teeth. They’re designed to be durable and stain-resistant, giving you a whiter smile for years to come. Veneers can also help assist with the structure of the tooth and other cosmetic problems, like chipped or cracked teeth.

Veneers are also a fairly conservative cosmetic dentistry treatment. The selected teeth are prepped by shaving off a small amount of tooth enamel. The veneers are then permanently bonded to your teeth.
